National Identities between Empires: perspectives from Ukraine & Luxembourg

The Luxembourg Embassy in Berlin and the Ukrainian Institute in Germany invite you to a high-calibre reading and discussion evening at the House of Luxembourg - Maison du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg!

On the occasion of both Liberation Day (8 May) and Europe Day (9 May), Sofiia Andrukhovych, multiply translated Ukrainian writer, and the renowned author and cultural journalist Jeff Schinker from Luxembourg will talk about the emergence, existence and survival of national identities between the European empires.
The two authors will be offering insights into the search for identity of nations and people who are usually covered in a modest number of pages in history books. The authors approach this complex topic with excerpts from their works and personal experiences. Kateryna Rietz-Rakul, Head of the Ukrainian Institute in Germany, will moderate the evening.

Sofiia Andrukhovych
Born in 1982 in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. She lives in Kyiv and works as a writer, translator and essayist. Her remarkable literary breakthrough came in 2014 with the novel "The Paper Boy", which has been translated into several languages and made into a film. It was published by Residenz Verlag in 2016. Most recently, the the three-volume epic Amadoka was published: "The Story of Romana" (2023), "The Story of Ulyana" (2023) and "The Story of Sofia" (2024), in which the author explores the themes of memory and identity.

Jeff Schinker
Born in 1985 in Luxembourg City, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Jeff Schinker works as an author, journalist and editor for culture in Luxembourg. His publications include the novella "Retrouvailles" (2015), the short story collection "Sabotage" (2018) and the novel "Ma vie sous les tentes" (2021). From 2016 to 2023, Jeff Schinker worked as head of the culture editorial department of the Luxembourg daily newspaper Tageblatt. Today he is coordinator in the music and culture editorial department at Radio 100,7. In 2023, the writer was a fellow of the Luxembourgish author residency at the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin.

Kateryna Rietz-Rakul
Dr. Kateryna Rietz-Rakul studied English and American Studies in Lviv and Berlin and completed her doctorate in contemporary literature. She is an interpreter, translator and cultural manager. Kateryna Rietz-Rakul has written for numerous international art magazines and published several books, including a city guide to Berlin's cultural scene, Berlin Contemporary Art. Since the beginning of 2023, she heads the foreign representative office of the Ukrainian Institute in Germany, based in Berlin.
